Since I've heard that these video games may be harmful to a child's mental health, ergo I wanted different opinions in this.

There's been no verifiable proof that violent video games have an effect on children. I grew up playing the Grand Theft Auto series as a young kid. I never went out and hurt anyone. I view video games the same as movies. You're going to see violence in pretty much anything these days. It's pretty much everwhere. From the movies, tv, music, it's all there.
As I have gotten older, I do agree that kids should not be playing the likes of GTA. I wouldn't allow my own kids to play stuff like GTA, because of the violence. The same as if I was watching a R rated movie. I constantly think, is there nudity in this? Well I better not show this to my kids. As a kid you don't really think about that stuff, but as an adult, you can see that kids probably shouldn't be playing violent video games.
Here's what it comes down to, parenting. It's not the video games, it's poor parenting.
I don't think kids who do play stuff like GTA, go out and be violent though. In fact I think it's kind of a tool to relax in a way. That's how I always saw it.
