I think approaching someone with an open mind is key. I am a Christian and I know a lot of people think of Christians as racists and homophobic because of a small group of Christians who actually are. Most are kind, love to help, and can make wonderful friends. I have seen the way Muslims have been treated because of their faith throughout the US and I think it is wrong. While people don't get violent, they judge without even knowing the people. I think that is a general fault in humanity as a whole. We tend to judge/fear what we don't understand.

Well, by simply asking them about it. Sometimes the simplest thing is to just ask questions, and there's nothing bad about doing that. Some people may find it offensive, but I think for the most part, people want to have questions asked. That's how we learn about other religions. And I think religious people like to talk about their faith when asked.
