Your question has stumped me. I have been sitting here for a few minutes now, trying to come up with a good answer but it is yet to come. All I can say is that I've only ever found myself asking this question when I wasn't happy with the way life was going. The times when I have asked the question while being truly happy, the reasons for my happiness and the ways in which I've expressed said happiness have been different. I don't think there is a single way to tell if you're happy, but if you find yourself waking up with energy and hope for the day, you must be happy.

I feel the same way. In all genuinity, I was asked this question by my brother, and I had to stop myself from blurting out whatever came to mind and actually think about it. It came down to the mere peace of being able to live through and doing everyday trivial things and not being bothered. The same way as you said on "waking up with energy and hope for the day."

I think for me, it’s that feeling of content, focusing on what goes right in lieu of what goes wrong. I don’t like the feel I get when I fixate on the negatives. That could drive anyone into a nervous breakdown. I guess one of my biggest signs is when I smile instead of feeling like an ocean ready to storm when people cut in front of me in a line, blocking the way on the escalator, group of friends refusing to walk single file on a crowded sidewalk, talking at the movies, taking forever at the ATM while tons of people are waiting, etc. Life`s full of peaks and valleys, not fretting the small stuff is one sure way to set ourselves up for long-lasting bliss.
