Rather than a toxic relationship, I'd say a toxic trait. I guess being an unpaid therapist for someone who only knows how to wallow about their problems despite being given solutions and help yet whimpering about them, blaming others, never taking the initiative to go ahead, and just never respecting me at the same time, only treating me right when they needed me, made me get up, leave the room, and never come back.

I'm sorry you had to deal with that and I'm glad you were able to set a boundary. I relate to your answer and have recently started setting the same boundary with people who don't want to make a change and only want to complain. Kudos to you!

Wow! This is beyond hash on all levels. I would say pick those you choose to help wisely and stop wasting your precious time and energy helping the ungrateful vampires. Life is too short to waste on those that would leave us high and dry after bleeding us dry. Please be careful with who you spend your time and energy with.

I agree with you. Life is too short to waste it away on people who leave us bleeding dry. I'll be careful in the future. Thank you!

I walked away from a few toxic toxic friendships after high school. I wish them all well and I hope they've grown in their lives the same way as I have in mine. The point of no return for me was when I realized that they didn't care about my life or happiness at all. I was more of an agony aunt to them than anything else and they were rarely there for me when I needed them. I honestly have had a much better time since I stopped being involved with them and I've met more people who care about me and take interest in my life the same way I do in theirs.

Sad that you had to go through all that; I am really glad you were able to find the courage and strength to leave. Nothing beats the feeling one has when we call it quits on a relationship that consistently steals our joy. Thanks for sharing.
