An orphan little girl befriends a benevolent giant who takes her to Giant Country, where they attempt to stop the man-eating giants that are invading the human world.

Huh? I mean yeah, giants have existed, and I'd argue they still do. Well, if you're referring to giants by the NBA and pro wrestling standards. I know Andre the Giant was a big fella, he was said to be over 7 feet tall. He continued to grow until he died, because he had a rare condition that made his body continue to grow. But, if you're referring to giants like, james and the giant peach?
As for your post, are you quoting the synopsis for the movie BFG? Not sure what that movie has to do with real giants, but ok.

Historically, there are about 7 to 9 human species such as the homo Sapiens, the homo erectus, neanderthals etc. Among these were the giants, who were super tall; giants to be honest; albeit not very smart.
In the book, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, much about the our ancestors is revealed. How we conquered the other species, intellectually, and created our own civilisation.
Now, some might argue against the existence of Giants. However, one thing is sure of science and its discoveries; fossils don't lie.
That means, stones and the fossils within them can last a very long time. These are the very things that help us map the timeline of the earth etc; even the extinction of dinosaurs.
So there are many proofs of Giants existence. Is it relevant now? Maybe not; but it does show that we don't even know 1% of the things things occur in our planet
Now there's space....

Just like the fairy tales, Father Christmas (Santa Claus) and all those many things we were told when young. These were just stories. But since they have been repeated for many years, and acted in movies, we may think they exist. It is a good way of building our imagination at a young age. As it makes us think beyond the obvious. It is a way of creative thinking. Just like kids watch cartoons to make them explore their inner creative mind. But at the right age, you will discover that there is no scientific or historical backing of such concepts as giants, vampires, aliens etc.

I don't think giants ever existed in the way that fantasy novels depict them. The hominins that lived earlier were very, but I don't know if they would be giants in the way a giant in a film would be.
