Having lost a cat a few months ago, I know what it is like to lose a close animal companion. I have lost three I was close to in my life as well as a few dogs. It hurts. There isn't much you can do for a person going through something like this. Just make sure they are taking care of themselves and being there for them. If they like physical affection, give them hugs. Coming from experience, when I lose a pet I struggle to eat. So if your friend is like this, just make sure they are eating.

The most important thing I can do is to be present for them and offer my support and prayers. Methinks, a reassuring hug, a shoulder to cry on, praying hands, lending a sympathetic ear as they relive the beautiful memories of their pet can go a long way to helping them feel a lot better. If I cannot for some reason be there face to face to support them, I will let them know that they can always count on me for anything they need, and more importantly, they are in my constant prayers.

My friend had got the news that her pet companion had gotten sick and only had a few days left to live, and I, myself, being someone who adores my kids, felt really bothered by how I could understand her and yet find it so difficult to comfort her. I was there with her and just made my presence and support known. Thank you for replying:)

How nice! I`m glad you were able to be there for her and offered the best you could. Our presence, as well as support, is the most precious gift we can give to a grieving friend.

The only thing anyone can do in such a scenario is be there for the friends should they want to talk. I personally am lucky that my pup recovered from his illness and has been stable since, but when I thought there was a chance of losing him, all I wanted was to be with him. I appreciated the fact that my friends tried to reassure me but I can't think of anything else that they could have done.

I hope that your friend's dog gets better and that worse doesn't come to worse after all.
